Note the metronome marking at the beginning: dotted-crotchet = 72. Now that's probably too fast. But NM takes this perfomance at 54bpm, which I would argue *is* too slow. There can be a more lilting, carefree version. The flourish in the last bars can be just that.

I'm surprised he didn't slow down for the quieter moments and let us appreciate Lizst's own manic intensity. We'll played but will not be my favorite interpretation of this piece.

Back in 1986, shortly after combat in the Gulf of Sirta, while on an aircraft carrier, I wrote a short story in which the narrator, during alive performance of this work, experiences a flash of inspiration during the instant between the first and second variation. The story is 'The Klein Bottle.' My favorite recording of this work is one which I have loved since 1976: Szeryng, Rubinstein, and Fournier. Hoomeyow!!

The Piano Trios are a beautiful set, and this is the joyous moment between the two darker pieces that surround it. Listening to Op. 1 as a full set is a very different experience from listening to just one of them.

Margulis' and Horowitz's are absolutely jokes. Trifonov's is absurdly unrhythmical and hands unsynchronized. Hamelin's and Sultanov's are impressive, albeit with very strange pauses and extra basses.
